Vol.62/No.26 July 6, 1998
'Independence for East Timor!'
Demanding self-determination for East Timor, some 200
students rallied June 17 at Justice Ministry in Jakarta,
Indonesia. The same day in Dili, East Timor, a march of
3,000, the largest in recent years, protested the killing of
21-year-old Herman Soares by Indonesian soldiers. President
B. J. Habibie said June 20 he would grant special status for
East Timor and withdraw the Indonesian troops who have
occupied it since 1975 if Indonesian sovereignty there was
recognized internationally. He rejected students' demand for
a referendum on independence.
