August 26 national march to protest cop brutality
The "Redeem the Dream" demonstration, marking the 37th anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington, was initiated by Alfred Sharpton, president of the National Action Network, and Martin Luther King III, president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). The march, to be held at the Lincoln Memorial, will demand "action by the White House and Congress to penalize offenders of racial profiling and police brutality," according to a fact sheet distributed by the National Action Network. Other Black rights organizations that have endorsed the demonstration besides the SCLC include the NAACP, National Urban League, National Council for Negro Women, and Rainbow Coalition. For more information about the event, call 1-877-9-REDEEM.
