Teachers walk out in Paraguay and Chile

Teachers in Chile (above) and Paraguay held nationwide strikes in October. In Paraguay, teachers walked out October 27 to protest government efforts to force them to work a minimum of 40 years before retirement. The current law allows retirement after 25 years of service. Oscar Duarte Frutos, Paraguay’s president, called the strike—which has shut down schools across the country— “irresponsible… since only 10 percent of the population make it to retirement.” In Chile, teachers walked out for two days October 23-24 to press for a wage increase and to demand the government halt steps to privatize education.
