Puerto Rican independence fighter
speaks at U.S. Social Forum
Militant/Maura DeLuca
ATLANTA, June 30—Long-time Puerto Rican independence fighter Rafael Cancel Miranda spoke on a panel here today as part of the U.S. Social Forum to demand freedom for political prisoners held in U.S. jails. A former political prisoner himself for fighting to free Puerto Rico from U.S. colonial rule, Cancel Miranda, urged those present to support the fight to free four Puerto Rican independentistas still incarcerated in U.S. prisons—Oscar López, Carlos Alberto Torres, Haydée Beltrán, and José Pérez González; the Cuban Five (see article below); Leonard Peltier, a leader of the American Indian Movement; and Mumia Abu-Jamal. Cancel Miranda also spoke yesterday at a workshop here on “Decolonization/Self-Determination for Puerto Rico.”
