Sacramento: 4,000 March For Affirmative Action
On November 3 the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear an
appeal of a challenge to Proposition 209, thus allowing
California to go ahead with the anti-affirmative action
measure. On October 27 students, unionists, and others from as
far away as Los Angeles marched on the state capitol steps in
support of affirmative action. Prop. 209 was passed as a
referendum last November. It outlaws affirmative action for
oppressed nationalities and women in state and local
governments and colleges and universities. With chants of "Hey,
Hey! Ho, Ho! 209 has got to go!" in the background, Daria Neal,
chair of the Black Law Students at the University of California
at Los Angeles (UCLA), said, "The atmosphere at UCLA is
different since 209. There are only a few students of color
enrolled." Jesse Jackson and the Rainbow Coalition, organizers
of the protest, have called for another action for February in
Los Angeles.
