Vol.62/No.15 April 20, 1998
Indonesian gov't bans students from politics
After months of student protests calling for the ouster
of Indonesian president Suharto, like March 19 action in
Surabaya above, Education Minister Wiranto Arismunandar said
Jakarta would call on state-run universities to enforce a
ban on campus political activity. A former rector at
Bandung Institute for Technology, Arismunandar expelled 12
students and suspended 61 who participated in recent
demonstrations. Meanwhile, some 500 people lined up outside
Bank Danamon, after Jakarta suspended seven banks and put
seven more under government control. The move is aimed at
attempting to halt the downward spiral of that country's
economy in the past nine months.
