Workers fight cutbacks in Hong Kong
Hundreds of civil service workers march in Hong Kong in
early June to defend job security, pay, and pensions that are
under assault by bosses there. Bus drivers drove slowly
through the city in solidarity with the demonstration.
Meanwhile, pilots at Cathay Pacific Airways forced the
employers to cancel flights May 6 as pilots called in sick
for the 10th day in a row to protest proposed wage cuts.
Hong Kong's economy shrank 5.7 percent in the fourth quarter
of 1998 and it has been mired in its worst recession since
World War II.
