Colombia: one-day strike rejects gov't austerity
More than half a million public sector workers held a one-day strike March 16 to protest government austerity measures. In conjunction with this action, tens of thousands of workers, students, and peasants held demonstrations all over the country. Colombian president Andrés Pastrana's administration deployed 70,000 troops to "maintain order." Above, students at National University lead antigovernment chants during demonstration on Bogotá's Bolivar Plaza in support of the strike.
