Participants in the rally included workers from several Imerys-owned plants in Georgia and Alabama, where workers are fighting to win or keep union recognition. This included 50 unionists from Drybranch, Georgia, who believe they will face a fight when their contract expires later this year.
One of the speakers was Fred Higgs, general secretary of the International Federation of Chemical, Energy, Mine and General Workers Unions, an umbrella organization of unions in different countries. Higgs said that Imerys workers in England, France, and other countries supported the struggles in Alabama and Georgia.
