Washington takes next steps to oust Vieques protesters
As we go to press, two U.S. warships left Norfolk, Virginia, toward Puerto Rico to pick up a contingent of 1,000 Marines as Washington steps up preparations to remove protesters from Vieques. White House officials said the assault could be begin April 30. U.S. federal marshals and FBI agents are expected to launch the attack, which will also include Puerto Rican cops. The U.S. government plans to install the troops as an occupation force around the bombing range on Vieques.
