Riot cops confront demonstrators during celebrations in the streets of Peru's capital, Lima, after announcement by President Alberto Fujimori on September 16 that new presidential elections would be held within six months and he will not run. The event precipitating his announcement was a bribery scandal involving his right-hand man, secret police chief Vladimiro Montesinos. While Fujimoris's anti-establishment demagogy and promises to "get things done" won him popular support for a number of years, his usefulness to the capitalist rulers has become exhausted as the capitalist economic crisis breeds growing social turbulence.
