Greetings from Gerardo Hernández, one of five Cuban revolutionaries locked up in U.S. prisons |
The above card was sent to the Militant by Gerardo Hernández, one of the five Cuban revolutionaries serving draconian sentences in U.S. prisons on frame-up charges of conspiracy to commit espionage and, in the case of Hernández, conspiracy to commit murder. The Cuban Five, arrested in 1998 and convicted in 2001, had been on an international mission to gather information on ultrarightist groups that have carried out violent attacks on Cuba from U.S. soil with Washingtons complicity. Hernández is serving a double life sentence at the U.S. prison in Lompoc, California. Four of the five Cuban prisoners sent messages of greeting to the Militant. Hernándezs message reads: Dear comrades of the Militant, In honor of the occasion of your 75th anniversary and the 45th of the Cuban Revolution, we want to express our congratulations and holiday greetings, wishing you and your readers a very successful 2004, and thanking you for your continual solidarity with Cuba and the Cuban Five. ˇHasta la Victoria siempre! [Ever onward to victory!] On behalf of the five, Gerardo Hernández Nordelo, U.S. Penitentiary-Lompoc, December 2003.
