‘Militant’ launches sub renewal effort

BY DOUG NELSON
On February 5 supporters of the Militant and its sister publication in Spanish, Perspectiva Mundial, began an international effort to expand the long-term readership of the socialist press. The four-week renewal campaign, which runs through March 6, will take advantage of the successful spring and fall subscription drives of 2004. Partisans of the socialist press have taken a goal of winning more than 400 subscribers to renew their subscriptions to the two publications during the drive.

Since the beginning of this year, the number of readers has begun to decline as subscriptions continue to expire. The renewal campaign gives distributors of the socialist press an opportunity to systematically contact those subscribers and maximize the number that decide to become long-term readers. Among them will be hundreds of workers and youth who followed the Militant’s coverage of the Socialist Workers presidential election campaign. Some will be interested in attending the World Festival of Youth and Students taking place in Venezuela this summer.

The subscription renewal drive will also help Militant supporters get in touch with dozens of coal miners who subscribed to the socialist press last fall, in part because of the Militant’s coverage of the Co-Op miners fight for recognition with the United Mine Workers of America.

The campaign is short—just four weeks—and will require consistent attention and planning to get in contact with as many subscribers as possible. In many cases, participants in the effort will organize house visits to collect subscriptions, and introduce Militant readers to socialist books and pamphlets from Pathfinder Press.

Participant in the effort are encouraged to send reports on their progress to the Militant to help with the coverage of the campaign.
