Vol. 72/No. 49 December 15, 2008
Some knew of Pathfinder and had bought books at previous fairs. Others were surprised to learn that such bookswhich take up the history of the working-class movement, the Cuban Revolution, the deepening disorder of capitalism, the fight against racism and womens oppression, and the possibility of socialist revolution in the United Stateswere published and sold in bookstores, factories, workers districts, and universities in the worlds most powerful imperialist country.
Pathfinder sales at the fair were 60 percent higher than in 2007.
The top selling Pathfinder title was Is Socialist Revolution in the U.S. Possible? by Mary-Alice Waters. This booklet captures the debate on that subject at the central forum of the book fair last year, where Waters argued that socialism is possible and necessary. More than 300 copies of this title were sold. Other bestsellers included 136 copies of Malcolm X Talks To Young People; 102 copies of Nueva Internacional no. 8, featuring the article Revolution, Internationalism, and Socialism: The Last Year of Malcolm X; 99 copies of Cuba and the Coming American Revolution by Jack Barnes; 77 copies of The Working Class and the Transformation of Learning by Barnes; and 51 copies of Womens Liberation and the African Freedom Struggle by Thomas Sankara. All of these titles were in Spanish.
In addition to the books sold at the stand, 345 titles were ordered by Librerías del Sur, the government-run network of bookstores, to be sent to outlets around the country.
