NEW YORK—Some 7,000 people marched down Fifth Avenue June 17 to protest the New York City Police Department’s “Stop and Frisk” policy. Of the 685,724 stops by NYPD officers last year, nearly 90 percent were of Blacks or Latinos. Initiated by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, National Action Network, and 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, the action was endorsed by 300 labor, religious, and community organizations. Thousands of signs, many homemade, reflected growing resentment against the cop harassment. —Ruth Robinett Related articles: Newburgh, NY: Cops’ story is falling apart Front page (for this issue) | Home | Text-version home |
