Garment workers form a human chain outside the National Press Club in Dhaka, Bangla-desh, Jan. 9 demanding the arrest of the owner of Tazreen Fashions Ltd. In a fire Nov. 24 in its Ashulia factory more than 120 workers were killed. “A couple hundred workers took part in protests Jan. 9 and 10,” said Kal-pona Akter by phone from Dhaka. Akter is executive director of the Bangladesh Center for Work-ers Solidarity, one of several organizations participating in the actions. “Three middle managers were arrested right after the fire and three more just a few days ago,” she said. “But the owner has still not been apprehended.” Protesters also demanded compensation to each of the families of the killed workers, safe workplaces and trade union rights in the garment plants. —EMMA JOHNSON Related articles: 9,000 NY school bus workers walk out to secure their jobs Solidarity with NY bus workers!
