Members of the Socialist Workers Party from across the country joined the historic 1963 March for Jobs and Freedom in Washington, D.C. They “were pleased because they sold 7,500 copies of the paper,” the Militant reported after the march. But they were also “frustrated because they could have sold several thousand more if they had them.”
Priscilla March, a party member from New York, “decided not to expend her energies selling single copies. Instead she sold 66 introductory subscriptions to the paper.”
As the fight to tear down Jim Crow segregation spread, expanding interest in the Militant showed just how rapidly political opportunities can open up when working people move into action.
