Appreciation of Omari Musa
Just a note of appreciation for Omari Musa, memorialized in the April 21 issue of the Militant. My husband and I got to know Omari over several years as our guest, and at political activities. Never a dull moment! Omari loved politics, reading, travel, culture, languages, art, music, food and sharing with others. I learned a great deal from him. He spoke his mind and was a humble, thoughtful, kind person with a great sense of humor. Musa also listened patiently and respectfully. He explained things in plain language and put people at ease.
He said he made a point to learn different cultures and languages, to be better at relating to people politically. He believed it built trust and broke down barriers the capitalists try to put between us.
In our social activities people took a liking to him. Over the years they would ask how he was doing. I always had an idea because he would call every now and then, and vice versa. He’d say “Hey Sis!” or “What’s up, Teach?” and “Hola Hermano,” talk politics and catch up. It’s easy to see how such a person could become the kind of leader he was.
