UNITED NATIONS — The U.N. General Assembly Oct. 29 adopted a resolution by an overwhelming margin calling on Washington to end its more than six-decade-long economic war against Cuba.
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez reported that “over the past weeks the U.S. State Department waged an unprecedented campaign of pressure and intimidation” to try to “force sovereign states worldwide to change their vote on the resolution.” In the end, the vote was 165 in favor, 7 against and 12 abstentions.
The resolution introduced by Cuba detailed the devastating impact of U.S. economic sanctions on the lives of the Cuban people. During the debate, numerous government representatives condemned Washington’s slanderous campaign labeling Cuba a “state sponsor of terrorism.” Many thanked the Cuban people and their revolutionary government for their exemplary record of medical assistance and other solidarity.
