Washington is stepping up its daily bombardment of Afghanistan and its use of troops inside the country, as it drives to impose a protectorate there. Punishing air assaults from bombers, fighters, and AC-130 gunships targeting front-line Afghan government forces, supply depots, and military facilities in major cities have also hit residential areas, hospitals, and other civilian areas.

The imperialist assault has already pushed more than 1 million Afghan people from their cities and villages as they seek to escape the bombing.

While deepening its war against Afghanistan, Washington is at the same time stepping up its assault on the rights of working people in the United States.

U.S. and British troops out of Afghanistan! Stop the bombing!

Socialist Workers Party candidates have received unprecedented backing from independent activists across the country. “I consider Camejo and Reid infinitely more noteworthy than the major candidates and worthy of support,” declared Phillip Berrigan, the anti-Vietnam War leader. “The SWP’s suit against the FBI has been a major service to the American people. More power to you,” wrote Dr. Salvador Luria, winner of the 1969 Nobel Prize for medicine.

Others include leaders of the Black movement such as Black Scholar editor Robert Allen and Robert F. Williams.

“Many people always say a vote for a minor party or an independent is a ‘wasted vote,’” writes Anne Braden, the longtime civil rights fighter. “This year it seems to me a vote for either of the major parties is a wasted vote.”

Capitalist politicians and editors in the United States are trying to create the impression that the British election represents a “repudiation” of socialism.

An honest analysis of the election results shows that there was no important shift to the right in a Britain that was becoming fed up with the austerity policies of a half-hearted Labor Party government that was willing to cut social services under the pressure of Washington’s war preparations program.

Anyhow, socialism could not be repudiated in Britain because it had not been introduced there. The Labor government policy aimed at the reform of capitalism, not its abolition. When genuine socialism comes to Britain, the measures it takes will be so decisive, the support it evokes will be so overwhelming, that the capitalists will never get another chance to save their decaying system.
