Members of the Socialist Workers Party are encouraging readers of the Militant who subscribed during the party’s recent spring campaign to join them in building solidarity with union strike struggles and in organizing actions to defend Cuba from Washington’s growing threats and oil blockade.
And join them to learn more about the SWP and the working-class road forward it presents against the capitalist class and their twin Democratic and Republican parties — a road for workers to take political power into our own hands.
Working people are looking for an explanation about the root cause of the U.S. rulers’ spreading wars and the upsurge of deadly Jew-hating assaults here and worldwide and what can be done to end them.
When SWP members in Minneapolis set up a literature table in front of their headquarters May 7, Jon Lenihan stopped to talk. “I’ve passed by your window and meant to see what you are all about,” he told SWP member Edwin Fruit. In the window is a sign, “Oppose Jew-hatred; Defend Israel’s right to exist as a refuge for Jews.”
Lenihan is Jewish and said he has a hard time talking to his “radical” friends on the topic of the Middle East. After a discussion, the retired teacher decided to get a six-month subscription to the Militant.
An Ecuadorian worker walking by chose to get a Spanish-language copy of Revolution and the Road to Peace in Colombia: The Example of the Cuban Revolution by revolutionary leader Fidel Castro.
“With the Militant, you help me stay more in touch with the world,” Amina Ali, a subscriber, told SWP members in Minnesota when they stopped by for a visit. She renewed her subscription and picked up a copy of Cuba and the Independence War in Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde: The Fall of the Last Colonial Empire in Africa by Víctor Dreke.
This book is Pathfinder’s latest title. It tells the little-known story of Cuba’s participation in this historic struggle and the revolutionary capacity of its leader, Amílcar Cabral.
Nate Stackhouse, an information technology worker, was one of hundreds at a May 17 picnic in Lindstrom, Minnesota, sponsored by Teamsters Local 320, in support of striking Chisago County public workers. After talking with SWP member Joanne Murphy, he subscribed to the Militant and bought a copy of Women and Revolution: The Living Example of the Cuban Revolution. He wanted to learn more about the Cuban Revolution and why Washington’s drive to destroy it is accelerating today.
In California the Sacramento Bee ran a column May 18 on candidates running for governor. It describes some of them, including saying, “Then there are candidates here for the larger struggle, like Margaret Trowe of the Socialist Workers Party. Trowe, who works in housekeeping at a hotel in Berkeley, has spent decades in the labor movement.”
“The working class is really getting hammered,” Trowe says in the article. “I believe there will be a socialist revolution — a mass movement of millions of workers.”
