MONTREAL — Joe Young, left, the Communist League candidate in the St. Laurent district for next October’s provincial election, campaigned door to door here June 24.
Supporters of Young’s campaign are gathering the 100 signatures needed to get him on the ballot. Their goal is to get double the number needed to ensure they have more than enough valid signatures. As of July 7 they have 64.
Young spoke with education worker Youssef Achi, right, a Berber born in France whose family had moved there from Algeria. “There were many changes in the world under the impact of the fight against colonialism,” Achi said.
“As part of those worldwide struggles, under the leadership of Fidel Castro and the July 26 Movement, working people in Cuba made a socialist revolution,” Young replied. “They carried out a mass literacy campaign so everyone could read and write, so they could participate more effectively in setting the country’s future. The U.S. rulers are determined to crush the example Cuba’s revolution sets for workers and farmers everywhere. We need to build a movement to defend Cuba against imperialism’s attacks.”
Achi agreed. However, he wasn’t confident that workers are capable of “changing the world, because of human nature.”
Young said that working people, like the millions of “people from nowhere” who made the Cuban Revolution, are transformed in the course of the class struggle.
Achi took campaign literature to read and share. He signed the petition to get Young on the ballot and thanked him for the discussion.
