The U.N. General Assembly will debate and vote on an annual resolution calling on Washington to end its blockade against Cuba Oct. 27-28. This year’s vote takes place after the U.S. rulers imposed a total oil blockade and sharply escalated crippling sanctions intended to deprive the Cuban people of the basic necessities of life.
Ever since workers and farmers, led by Fidel Castro, took power in 1959, Washington has tried to overturn the first socialist revolution in the Americas and reimpose U.S. imperialist exploitation of Cuba.
Working people and our unions should stand shoulder to shoulder with toilers in Cuba, demanding an unconditional end to the oil blockade and all U.S. trade and financial measures against Cuba enacted over more than six decades.
The truth about the Cuban Revolution is reported week in and week out in the Militant, and in books by Cuban and Socialist Workers Party leaders published by Pathfinder. Getting these publications out is vital to countering Washington’s lies. It’s key to building broader participation in protests calling on the U.S. government to get its hands off Cuba.
The day after the U.S. rulers enacted a trade embargo on Cuba Feb. 3, 1962, over a million Cubans poured into the streets of Havana. Castro told them that behind Washington’s hatred of their revolution is fear of its example. “Fear that the plundered people of the continent will seize the arms from their oppressors and, like Cuba, declare themselves free peoples of the Americas.”
Decades later Castro pointed to the decisive class character of the revolution. Cuba will never renounce the “true principle of government of the people, by the people and for the people,” he said, “which translated into revolutionary language, is government of the workers, by the workers and for the workers.”
That is something the U.S. capitalist class can never forgive. And it’s why working people here should join the Cuban people in demanding U.S. hands off Cuba!
