“U.S. government policy of hostility toward Cuba has been in place since the very triumph of the Cuban Revolution back in January 1959,” Yuri Gala López, deputy permanent representative of Cuba to the United Nations, told a Feb. 15 webinar sponsored by a coalition of groups from Canada, Puerto Rico and the U.S.
Under every U.S. administration since — Democrat and Republican alike — this aggression has remained unabated “simply because our nation dared to achieve true sovereignty and independence,” he said, and has preserved it through a socialist revolution.
The program was organized to respond to the latest escalation of Washington’s relentless aggression against the Cuban people and government following a Jan. 29 executive order imposing an oil blockade on the island.
Other speakers included Peter Kornbluh, an analyst with the National Security Archive; Déborah Santana of the Cuban Solidarity Committee of Puerto Rico; Julio Fonseca, co-chair of the Canadian Network on Cuba; Kevin Kucera, International Association of Machinists District 190 area director and others.
Speakers urged participants to attend the March 14-15 Action Conference for US-Cuba Normalization in New York, which will feature representatives of the Federation of Cuban Women and other Cuban mass organizations and institutions.
Ambassador Gala described how Cuban people are facing the crisis aggravated by Washington’s oil blockade. We are going to overcome this very difficult period “with the creative resilience, effort, and talent of the majority of Cuban women and men.”
