MARTINEZ, Calif. — Over 100 unionists, family members and other supporters of the 120 workers on strike at the Marathon refinery joined an expanded picket line here May 11. The workers, members of United Steelworkers Local 5, are in their third week on strike. They plan to continue these “Solidarity Mondays” as long as it takes to win.
UNITE HERE hotel workers, IBEW electricians, members of the United Food and Commercial Workers union, American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees, the Bakery Workers union and others turned out. Contra Costa Labor Council members inflated a giant “Scabby the Rat,” a rodent that represents the anti-union, anti-worker bosses and anyone who supports them.
The workers are demanding a four-year contract that will expire on the same date as fellow workers in the USW’s National Oil Bargaining Program. They reject the company’s claim that since the diesel produced is made out of tallow and other renewable sources, not crude oil, they shouldn’t be eligible for the “national pattern” wage increase. They’re also demanding that overtime after their 12-hour shifts be voluntary, a safety issue.
Striker Frank Payon told the Militant he is very concerned with untrained managers and others running the refinery. Unsafe practices there have already been verified by Cal/OSHA, he said. “These units are very dangerous. Last week they had a fire at the PBF refinery next door.”
“It’s frustrating,” he added. “We work long hours, overtime, sacrificing time with our families and yet this company doesn’t give in even a little. They are making a killing right now with the high price at the pump.”
Like many of those on strike, this is Payon’s first strike. “This is a hard fight. But now I’m seeing that the only answer is our collectivity, standing together for what is right.”
