Immigrant workers are taking an increasingly important part in fighting for the unity of the working class. In face of the brutality of the capitalist rulers and their stepped-up harassment of immigrants, immigrant workers are taking the moral high ground.
As the U.S. economic boom slumps into stagnation, and the speculative frenzy of stock investment contracts, the rulers’ assault on our wages, working conditions, and social benefits will deepen. They will work to pit different sections of our class against each other, to weaken and divide the labor movement.
The militancy of workers organizing unions in slaughterhouses, laundries, and other plants around the country and resisting the brutal conditions the bosses try to impose on them, and the growing boldness of the movement for immigrant rights are signs that the rulers have a problem.

As the Militant was going to press we learned of the dismissal of firearms and explosives charges against Dennis Banks and three other members of the American Indian Movement. This case was a political witch-hunt from the word go. It took the judge all of eighteen minutes to throw it out of court.
This victory was not a gift of the “American system of justice.” The dismissal was won through the rallies and demonstrations demanding that charges be dropped, and the glaring light of publicity these protests focused on the case.
The real criminals are the rulers of this country. For years they have carried out a war against Indian activists, using frame-ups, Cointelpro-style disruption, and even assassinations. The judge’s decision exposes what the government is doing. It also shows that the government’s drive can be fought and defeated.

After the end of World War II the people of the U.S. and the whole world hoped for an era of peaceful collaboration between nations — but the Militant warned on Aug. 18, 1945 that “There Is No Peace!”
After six years of World War II, and the emergence of the U.S. power as dominant in the world, there has not been a moment’s peace. Two ravaging world wars prove that capitalism cannot reorganize the world to live in peace. To establish a society which will enrich human life, a new system is needed.
It remains for the American people to draw the conclusion from the present impasse that the cause for war is the capitalist system. A socialist America, freely exchanging its gigantic production of goods with the rest of the world, exporting its science and knowledge and technique instead of guns and planes and bombs. That is the only road to peace.
