Statement by the Communist League in Australia

The horrific shooting of Jews celebrating Hanukkah at Bondi Beach December 14, was a violent act of Jew-hatred which should be condemned by all working people, our unions, and supporters of democratic rights.

Since the murderous pogrom carried out by Hamas against Jews in Israel on October 7, 2023, the number of attacks on Jews, on synagogues and Jewish homes and businesses in Australia has escalated.

These assaults have been encouraged by street demonstrations mobilising support for Hamas and calling for the destruction of Israel and its people. The Bondi shooting shows what is meant by the slogan “Globalise the intifada.”

The Labor government led by Anthony Albanese has lined up with other imperialist powers attacking Israel and ignored warnings from Jewish organisations of the likelihood of a deadly attack on Jews in Australia.

In today’s world of deepening social and economic crises, growing capitalist rivalries and wars, we will see more anti-Semitic assaults. The fight against Jew-hatred and defence of Israel as a refuge for Jews is a life-or-death question for the working class everywhere.

We cannot rely on the government or their police. The most powerful force that can push back these attacks and prevent another Holocaust is the working class. Fighting Jew-hatred is an essential part of working people fighting in their own interests.
